Parque Madureira, in full Parque Madureira Mestre Monarco, is a modern green space of 450,000 square metres, opened on 23 June 2012 and extended in 2015, between the Madureira and Guadalupe districts of Rio's North Zone. It is the city's third largest park, after Flamengo Park and Quinta da Boa Vista. It was designed around the pastimes of the working-class suburbs: courts for bocce and a skate park, cycle paths, woods and a stream, a Knowledge Square, and a circular Samba Square whose floor bears the emblems of the area's two most traditional samba schools, Império Serrano and Portela. The park has earned the AQUA certificate for high environmental quality. It is named after Mestre Monarco, an icon of the Portela school, and reflects the spirit of Madureira, one of Rio's samba strongholds. A visit shows another side of the city far from the beaches; go during the day.
