Massairo Okamura State Park is a green space of cerrado woodland in the middle of a densely built-up part of Cuiabá. It covers 51 hectares east of Avenida Rubens de Mendonça, near the administrative centre of the Mato Grosso state government, and about five hundred people visit it every day. It was created as an ecological reserve by law on 1 September 2000 and became a state park on 21 September 2001. It protects the headwaters of the Barbado and Moinho streams, and 129 species of trees and plants have been recorded along its trails, including cerrado species and medicinal plants such as jatobá, cumbaru and aroeira; howler monkeys live here too. The park has about two kilometres of trails, public toilets, an environmental education centre, a stage for community events and the Indigenous Nations Plaza, a tribute to the Bororo people who lived in the region before colonisation. It suits a morning or evening stroll, away from the midday heat.
