Montanhas de Teresópolis Municipal Nature Park is an Atlantic Forest reserve in the north-west of Teresópolis, bordering Petrópolis and São José do Vale do Rio Preto. At 4,397 hectares it is the largest fully protected municipal reserve in Rio de Janeiro state, created by decree on 6 June 2009 as part of the central Rio Atlantic Forest mosaic. The park holds an imposing range with large rock outcrops, among them Tartaruga («Turtle»), Camelo («Camel») and Santana, and it adjoins Serra dos Órgãos National Park at the Caleme dam. Parts were degraded before it was created and efforts are under way to restore them; a survey recorded 121 bird and 31 mammal species. Its best-known trail climbs Pedra da Tartaruga, fairly easy and short enough for children, with harder guided outings to other rocks. The best hiking season is May to September, when the weather is drier; check access rules.
