Morro do Baú Botanical Park is an Atlantic Forest reserve in Ilhota in the Itajaí River valley, a short drive from Balneário Camboriú and Itajaí. Surrounded by forest, it has trails and small waterfalls, and draws researchers keen to study its native species. Its best-known feature is the Morro do Baú, the «Chest», whose summit rises above eight hundred metres. Hikers climb about four and a half kilometres in roughly two hours on a trail many describe as hard, gaining more than six hundred metres in height. From the top the view opens over the Itajaí Valley with its farms and rivers, with the ocean on the horizon some thirty kilometres away. The climb is tiring, so carry water, food and insect repellent against the biting blackflies, start early in the morning, and check trail conditions with Ilhota town hall before going.
