Amazon trees.
Mindu Municipal Park is an urban park at the geographic heart of Manaus and one of the city's four protected areas showcasing the plants and animals of the Amazon ecosystem. It covers just over forty hectares and is part of the Igarapé do Mindu urban ecological corridor, linking surviving patches of living forest within the city. The park was born in 1989 from a campaign by local residents to protect this patch of primary and secondary forest from encroachment and to safeguard the habitat of the pied tamarin, an endangered monkey found only around Manaus. The Mindu stream that gives the park its name runs through it. The park has walking trails among giant Amazon trees, a library of about four thousand publications on the environment and environmental education programmes. On the third Sunday of each month the «Sunday at Mindu» programme offers cultural entertainment and environmental learning. It is a close and easy way to taste the Amazon forest without leaving the city; go in the morning to see birds and monkeys.
