Saint-Hilaire/Lange National Park protects 25,119 hectares of Atlantic Forest on the coast of Paraná. It was created by law on 23 May 2001, is run by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, and spans Guaratuba, Matinhos, Morretes and Paranaguá. Its altitude ranges from ten to 1,500 metres and it takes in the Serra da Prata, the easternmost mountains in Paraná and part of the Serra do Mar, whose highest point is the 1,500-metre Morro Grande. The mountains are an important source of high-quality water for the communities from Guaratuba to Paranaguá, and are covered in lowland and montane rainforest and high meadows. The park has trails of varying difficulty and waterfalls, among them the climb up the Morro do Escalvado in Matinhos, a trail of about 800 metres that takes fifteen to thirty minutes; the cable car that once served it has been closed for some thirty years. Some trails cross private land, so check which routes are open with the park office.
