Petrópolis Municipal Nature Park is a green reserve in the historic centre of Petrópolis, the imperial city in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro state, at 800 to 1,070 metres above sea level. It covers 16.7 hectares of well-preserved Atlantic Forest, a short walk from the city's museums and palaces. The campaign to protect the site and keep it from other uses began in 1992, when civic groups organised activities and events; in 2002 they set up a committee for the ecological park that rallied residents to create it. Since December 2006 it has been part of the Central Rio de Janeiro Atlantic Forest mosaic, and it belongs to the Petrópolis Environmental Protection Area and the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve. It has two easy to moderate walking trails of 800 and 830 metres, and tables and benches for resting and taking in nature. It suits a nature break between museum visits; check the hours.
