The Professor João Vasconcelos Sobrinho Municipal Nature Park, also known as Serra dos Cavalos, is a reserve in Caruaru in inland Pernambuco, run by the city and named after a pioneer of environmental protection in the state. Created by municipal law in 1983, it protects a «brejo de altitude», a humid montane forest at about 900 metres in the middle of the semi-arid region, covering some 359 hectares, one of the largest Atlantic Forest patches in the area. Few remnants of this forest type survive in the state, which makes it a biological refuge rich in ferns, lichens and fungi. It has walking trails, among them an educational trail of about four kilometres through its plant groups, and can be explored with a guide. It suits a green outing combined with Caruaru and its famous market; check the hours.
