Xixová-Japuí State Park protects an isolated, well-preserved stretch of Atlantic Forest on the coast between São Vicente and Praia Grande, near Santos, covering 901 hectares: 554 in Praia Grande and 347 in São Vicente. The park spreads over green hills falling to the sea, crossed by trails such as the Curtume and Surfistas paths. The best known is the Itaquitanduva trail, about four kilometres long, which ends at a small beach of the same name ringed by rocks and loved by surfers. Access to Paranapuã beach inside the park is restricted and visitor numbers are controlled. Entry is free from Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 15:00, according to the latest available information; check which trails are open with the state forestry foundation before going, and bring water and food, as services are few.
