The Piauí Zoobotanical Park, the «Bioparque», is a wildlife and plant protection area in north-east Teresina covering 127 hectares between the Poti River, the main tributary of the Parnaíba, and the PI-112 highway. It is Brazil's third-largest urban park and the largest in the north-east, run by a public-private partnership with the state environment department. The park works as a zoo, with reptiles, birds and native and exotic mammals, and has leisure areas for family outings and nature trails for walking and running. Its vegetation is semi-deciduous seasonal forest with riverside woodland along the Poti and its streams, a sample of the transition between the Amazon, caatinga and cerrado biomes. It suits half a day with the family; go in the morning before the heat builds, when the animals are active, and check opening times and admission prices.
