Pasikudah Beach is a bay on Sri Lanka's east coast at the resort town of Pasikudah, about 35 km northwest of Batticaloa and some 60 km east of Polonnaruwa in a straight line. Its Tamil name means green algae bay. Pasikudah began as a small Tamil hamlet beside neighbouring Kalkudah and has grown into a well-known resort over the past decade or more, with strict environmental rules holding back heavy building on the shore. It is easy to reach from Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Pasikudah is known for one of the longest stretches of shallow reef coastline in the world: the water is only a few inches deep for a long way, so people walk hundreds of metres out to sea, and the current is far gentler than elsewhere on Sri Lanka's coast. White sand curves around a half-moon bay of clear turquoise water fringed with palms. Visitors wade in the warm shallows and swim gently, making it a good beach for families and children, and watch the sunset over the bay. The east coast is usually calmest from about May to September.
