The town beach of Pangkal Pinang, capital of the Bangka Belitung province, stretching far with fine, firm, flat sand that allows walking and cycling on it at low tide, when the sea retreats a long way to reveal a wide expanse of shore. Off the beach lies a small rocky islet called Punan, which can be reached on foot across the sand at very low tide and by boat at high tide. The beach has cafés, seafood stalls and seating, and townspeople come in the late afternoon and at weekends. It is free or with small parking charges. The water is calm and shallow, good for children's swimming at high tide. It is the nearest beach to town, a quarter of an hour from the centre, good for an evening outing after the tin museum or for those without time for the northern beaches.
