Coming out of the tunnel
The moment the water and the cliff open up.

**Everything** — this is not an exaggeration. There is no café, kiosk, tap, toilet, hired parasol or lifeguard at the beach. Carry **plenty of water** (more than you think, because the climb back is hard), food, a parasol if you want shade, a towel, and **water shoes**, as the shingle is coarse. Take your rubbish away with you — there are no bins. And plan to leave **before the sun has drained you**, because the climb out takes energy.
Safe with ordinary care, with three serious caveats. **First**: the beach sits below a high cliff and **rockfalls do happen** — don't sit right against the cliff base, and check before setting out whether it is closed after a fall. **Second**: there is **no lifeguard** and the sea turns rough quickly on this exposed coast; don't swim far out or in heavy waves. **Third**: the way down is steps and a tunnel that can be **slippery when damp**, and the climb back is genuine effort. Avoid it altogether in bad weather.

A small beach at the foot of a **cliff some two hundred metres high** in the Konavle region south of Dubrovnik, repeatedly ranked among Europe's most beautiful. Getting to it is part of its story. The beach is **accidentally man-made**: when the villagers of Popovići cut tunnels through the cliff in the mid-twentieth century to reach their fields and boats, they pushed the excavated rock over the edge, it piled at the cliff's foot, and the waves shaped it into a beach of fine white shingle that had not existed before. You go down today by **steps and a tunnel cut in the rock** from the car park above — about ten minutes down and rather more coming up. The view as you come out of the tunnel is why it is famous: intensely clear turquoise water between two walls of rock, with the cliff hiding everything behind you. ⚠ But it is **not a family beach**: there are no facilities at all — no café, no parasols, no lifeguard, no toilets — the space is small and fills quickly, and rocks can fall.
