Paso de la Patria, or «El Paso» to locals, is a river town on the broad Paraná, about forty kilometres from the city of Corrientes, facing the mouth of the Paraguay river. It is one of northeast Argentina's leading tourist destinations and the favourite summer escape for people from Corrientes and Resistencia, so it has filled with weekend houses. Its best-known draws are its long sandy river beaches and fishing, above all for the big golden dorado, as the bluffs on its bank create strong currents anglers seek out. From the beach you see low green islands in the river and sunsets over the water. The beaches are free, with services and restaurants in season, and boats and guides can be hired for fishing. Summer is very hot, so mornings and evenings suit the beach best.
