Pedra da Macela is a mountain in the Serra do Mar, right on the border between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states, in the stretch of the range known as the Serra da Bocaina. It rises to 1,840 metres, the highest point in the area, and its summit lies on the boundary between Cunha in São Paulo and Paraty in Rio de Janeiro. The trail to the top starts in Cunha, at kilometre 65 of the SP-171 road beside the old Estrada Real, the royal road. There are two marked camping areas and a water tap, with work under way to improve facilities for visitors. Near the summit stands a Furnas power company installation with communications antennas, private property that tourists may not enter. The mountain takes its name from the wild macela shrubs on its slopes, which flower from March to May. On clear days the summit gives wide views over the mountains and coast, making a day trip from Paraty for hikers.
