The most beautiful castle in Eastern Europe, without rival: Peleș was built by King Carol I between 1873 and 1914 in the Sinaia forest as a royal summer seat in German style, timber towers and carved balconies — and it was the first castle in Europe fully lit by electricity, with a lift, central heating and a glass ceiling that slides open in summer. One hundred and sixty rooms of walnut and beech carved to the ceiling: the Hall of Honour with its spiral stair and sliding roof, the Armoury with four thousand pieces, the Moorish and Turkish rooms in carpet and brass, a library with a secret door behind the shelves — each room designed as a salon for a different culture. The basic tour covers the ground floor; the long tour climbs to the Queen's apartments. From Brașov an hour by train to Sinaia then fifteen minutes uphill among villas, or half an hour by car up the valley road. Beside it the smaller Art Nouveau Pelișor deserves the combined ticket.
