Pëllumbas Cave, also called the Black Cave, is a karst cave and archaeological site near the village of Pëllumbas on the left side of the Erzen River valley, about 15 km southeast of Tirana in a straight line. The cave mouth lies 350 metres above sea level, and the cave runs back as a tunnel about 70 to 80 metres long. Archaeological study shows that early people used its entrance more than 10,000 years ago, when they had learned to make fire and stone tools. Cave specialists first explored it in 1995. Inside are limestone chambers where stalactites hang from the ceiling and stalagmites rise from the floor in many shapes and colours, all in total darkness. Outside, the wide arched mouth looks out over green slopes and rocky mountains above the valley. Visitors walk up to the cave from the village on a climbing trail through the trees, then go inside with a guide by torchlight. The cave floor is damp and slippery, so wear suitable shoes and bring a torch.
