The bridge linking Penang Island to the mainland, about thirteen and a half kilometres long, more than eight of them over the Penang Strait. It opened in 1985 and was the only road link to the island until 2014. At its centre is a cable-stayed section held by four towers, each more than a hundred metres tall, where the deck rises thirty-three metres above the water to let ships pass. It is lit at night, looking like a necklace of light across the sea. In the south of the island stands the second bridge, the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, opened in 2014 and twenty-four kilometres long, the longest bridge in Malaysia. Drivers pay a toll only when heading onto the island. Some of the best places to see it are on the island's east coast near Gelugor and Queensbay, especially at sunrise or after sunset. You will cross it anyway if you visit the Bird Park at Seberang Jaya or travel to the mainland.
