The best-known spot for sunrise over Bromo, on the summit of Mount Penanjakan on the northern rim of the Tengger caldera, at about two thousand seven hundred metres. From its platforms appears the iconic view: a sea of mist and sand below, the smoking cone of Bromo, furrowed Mount Batok, and behind them the summit of Semeru, Java's highest mountain, puffing smoke. Jeeps arrive in darkness around three-thirty or four in the morning, followed by a short walk up to the crowded platforms. With first light the sky turns orange and pink and the scene reveals itself as the mist clears. Nearby alternatives with fewer crowds include King Kong Hill and Seruni Point. Access is included in the national park ticket, with the jeep hire separate. It is very cold before sunrise, and coffee and woolly hats are sold at the entrance. Book a jeep that arrives early to secure a good spot, or try nearby King Kong Hill for fewer crowds. After sunrise the jeeps descend to the sea of sand and Bromo.

Penanjakan is higher and more famous but busier; King Kong Hill is closer and quieter with a similar view. Many drivers suggest King Kong in busy seasons.
