Third in the Northeast.
The Serra das Almas, the «Mountains of Souls», is a range between Rio de Contas and Livramento de Nossa Senhora in south-western Bahia. Its highest point, Pico das Almas, rises to 1,958 metres, the third-highest point in north-eastern Brazil after Pico do Barbado and Pico do Itobira. These three summits were once the scene of a rush for gold and precious stones in the Chapada Diamantina. Above nine hundred metres the heights are covered in campo rupestre, rocky-field vegetation, and the range is known for endemic orchids and carnivorous plants, making it a reference for botanists. In recognition of its natural and tourist value, a 263-hectare private natural heritage reserve was created there in 2014. Hikers climb the peak on long trails, so go with a local guide from Rio de Contas, carry layers against cold and wind, and start at dawn.
