Pico do Baepi is a 1,048-metre mountain on Ilhabela island off São Paulo state's north coast, the island's fifth highest peak and the easiest to reach. Though not the tallest, it is the most prominent, seen from many angles, and its huge rock wall of more than 150 metres facing the town of São Sebastião has been climbed only once, in the 1980s. The mountain lies within Ilhabela State Park, which manages the trail to the summit, about 3.5 kilometres long; the climb takes three to four hours and the descent about two. The path is mostly uphill, with stretches of anchored, erosion-proof steps, and is well marked with pink ribbons on the trees and wooden signs giving altitude, distance and the names of some trees. The summit looks out over the channel and the facing coast. Start early, carry enough water, and check access rules with the park.
