Pico do Papagaio, «Parrot Peak», is the highest point in the state of Pernambuco, in the municipality of Triunfo about eight kilometres from the town centre by a municipal road. Tourist sources give its height as 1,260 metres, while official maps record around 1,185 metres; either way, it is the roof of the state. The summit has a broad lookout over the plains of the sertão stretching to the horizon and the neighbouring hills of Paraíba. It is watched over by a statue of a «Careta», one of the masked figures famous from Triunfo's carnival, made by the artist Nino Abraão, with a small visitor building beside it. Go up early in the morning or shortly before sunset, when the light is softer and the heat lower, and take a light jacket, as the wind on top can be cool. The visit combines well with a stroll around Triunfo, its lake and its historic cinema.
