Pico do Selado is a peak of the Mantiqueira range rising to 2,082 metres on the border between Monte Verde, in Camanducaia, Minas Gerais, and Joanópolis and São Francisco Xavier in São Paulo state, the highest summit seen from the mountain village. Its name, «the Saddled One», comes from its shape, which looks like a horse's saddle from afar. It is one of Monte Verde's best-known hikes: walkers climb a mountain trail through Atlantic forest and high-altitude grassland to a wide view over the Paraíba valley and the Mantiqueira ridges. The trail is fairly demanding and steep in places, so start early in the morning and carry water and warm clothes, as the weather changes fast at altitude. The best time is the dry winter from May to September, when skies are clear.
