A long row of old harbour warehouses on Kaohsiung's waterfront, abandoned as shipping declined and turned in the early 21st century into an arts and design district, now one of the city's best-loved places for residents and visitors. The concrete warehouses now hold galleries, design shops, bookshops, cafés and studios, with huge modern sculptures and colourful murals scattered across the wide yards between them, and the old harbour rail lines have become walkways. Kaohsiung's light rail runs through the district along the waterfront, and close by are the Pop Music Center with its futuristic building on the water and the ferry terminal for Cijin Island. The district hosts festivals and markets at weekends. Wandering the yards is free; some exhibitions charge. Late afternoon, when the heat eases and the sun sets over the harbour, is best. Southern Taiwan is hot and humid most of the year, so carry water and a hat; winter is the mildest season for sightseeing.
