Pinamar is a beach town on the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires province and one of Argentina's best-known summer destinations. Its name comes from the pine woods lining the sea: from 1941 the architect Jorge Bunge laid it out, planting conifers on the dunes to hold the sand, and drew curving streets that follow the dunes instead of a straight grid. The result is a green, quiet town of houses among the trees, a wide sandy beach running for kilometres, and tall dunes on its edges. In summer the beaches fill with holidaymakers and the cafés, restaurants and water sports come alive; out of season the town turns very calm. The beaches are free. It is about four hours from Buenos Aires by car or bus, and the season runs from December to March.
