An old town south-west of Qionglai, about 90 km from Chengdu, that has been a busy market since the Western Han more than two thousand years ago. Once called Pingluo, it is one of China's national historic towns. The Baimo River runs through it from west to east, lined with ancient banyans, some more than a thousand years old, wooden stilt houses over the water, river landings and blue-stone streets, and the seven-arched Leshan stone bridge, built in 1862, spans the river. Wandering the town is free at any hour, with riverside teahouses and boat rides for a fee, per visitor guides; it is loveliest in the evening, when lanterns light up the water.
