Piracuruca is a town of about 28,000 people in northern Piauí and the main gateway to Sete Cidades National Park: the municipality holds 74% of the park's 7,700 hectares, with their strange rock formations that look like ruined cities. Its history is little studied and full of legends; historians think its first parish was created around 1722 or 1723. Its centre has old mansions and houses and a railway station built in 1923, witnesses of its early-twentieth-century prosperity. Besides the national park, visitors head for the Prainha tourist complex on the reservoir, the environmental park and the historic buildings of the centre. The municipality also includes part of the Serra da Ibiapaba Environmental Protection Area, making it a good stop between Teresina and the coast.
