Pitimbu is a coastal town of about 19,000 people on the south coast of Paraíba, in Greater João Pessoa, with calm beaches, cliffs and coconut palms near the Pernambuco border. From the sixteenth century its coast drew French privateers who traded brazilwood with the Potiguara and Tabajara peoples, so that its anchorage became known as the «French harbour». In 1702 the governor of Pernambuco ordered the Pitimbu fort built to defend it, to a design by the engineer Diogo da Silveira Veloso. Visitors come today for its quiet, natural beaches, less crowded than João Pessoa's, and for its fishing villages and simple seafood restaurants. It makes a good day trip from João Pessoa along the coast road south.
