The night sky.
The planetarium of the Federal University of Santa Maria opened on 14 December 1971, exactly eleven years after the university was founded, as Brazil's fifth planetarium, the first in Rio Grande do Sul and the first in an inland city in the country. It bears the name of the university's founder and first rector, José Mariano da Rocha Filho. Its building was designed by the architect Oscar Valdetaro from an initial sketch given by Oscar Niemeyer at a meeting in Brasília in 1959. It seats about 120 people and used a Spacemaster projector until 2011, when a digital system replaced it. The rector is credited with bringing seven planetarium projectors to Brazil through an agreement with East Germany paid for in coffee. On the upper floor is the Museum of Art, Science and Technology, opened in 2021. The planetarium runs shows for schools and the public, and its round building is a landmark of the campus.
