The Plansee is a mountain lake in the Reutte District of Tyrol, western Austria, about 7 km east of Reutte and 14 km southeast of Füssen in Germany in a straight line. It covers about 2.87 square kilometres and is up to 78 metres deep. The Plansee and the Heiterwanger See, linked to it, are probably the remains of an Ice Age meltwater reservoir. The lake is first mentioned in a document from 1073/78, and its fishing rights were among the most prized holdings of the region's rulers and monasteries. A road beside it crosses into Germany. The clear turquoise water stretches between high forested mountains, with pebble shores, boat moorings and small wooden houses along the banks. From the air the lake looks like a long blue ribbon between the mountains, joined by a channel to the Heiterwanger See. Visitors swim in the cold clear water in summer, hire boats and take lake cruises, and walk the paths along the shore. The lake makes a good stop on the road between the Bavarian castles near Füssen and Tyrol.
