Playa Blanca is a beach on the Barú Peninsula south of Cartagena on Colombia's Caribbean coast, about 24 km southwest of the old city in a straight line, or about 45 minutes by boat. The peninsula is famous for its white beaches and turquoise water. Most of Barú's beaches are privately owned by individuals or tourism businesses, but Playa Blanca is the only public one. Most of the peninsula's roughly 20,000 residents, spread across three villages, live from tourism, working in hotels or selling crafts to visitors. Soft white sand runs a long way beside clear, calm turquoise water, shaded by palms and lined at one end by thatched huts and small restaurants. From the air, small boats look scattered across the transparent water off the beach. Visitors arrive by boat from Cartagena, or by road. The beach is very crowded at weekends and in holiday seasons and quieter early in the morning and on weekdays. Agree prices with vendors before buying.
