Playa Grande is Mar del Plata's best-known beach, a broad sweep of sand south of the Cabo Corrientes headland, framed by a stone promenade complex built from 1938 with terraces, stairways and beach clubs. It has long been the city's most elegant beach, lined in summer with the striped tents of its private clubs. Unlike the central bays, sheltered by stone breakwaters, Playa Grande faces the open Atlantic swell, which has made it the cradle of Argentine surfing; its breaks at Biología and by the yacht club are where many of the country's best surfers learned. Surf schools work on the beach in summer, and the promenade above makes a fine walk all year. The beach is public and free; tents and sunbeds in the clubs are rented by the day or the season. The water is cold even in January.
