Playa Unión is the main beach of Rawson, capital of Chubut province, near Puerto Rawson at the mouth of the Chubut river. It is named after the schooner Unión, wrecked near the shore in 1880, whose Italian captain and crew settled in the area. The resort was founded in 1923 and is now a long sandy beach, sometimes calm, sometimes with strong waves. Its best-known draw is boat trips to see Commerson's dolphin, known locally as the tonina overa, one of the world's smallest dolphins, with a white body and black head and fins, living mainly along the Patagonian coast. Inflatable boats leave the port on short trips of about an hour all year round, and the port holds a fishing fleet of bright orange boats. The beach is free. Rawson is about an hour from Puerto Madryn and pairs with Trelew and Gaiman.
