Poconé is a town in Mato Grosso, about a hundred kilometres from Cuiabá, and the northern gateway to the Pantanal wetlands: here begins the famous Transpantaneira road, which crosses the flooded plains towards Porto Jofre. The Bento Gomes River runs a few kilometres away, and the municipality holds part of the Taiamã Ecological Station and about 57% of the Encontro das Águas State Park, created in 2004 over some 109,000 hectares and one of the best-known places to see jaguars in the wild. Travellers stop in Poconé to stock up and stay before heading down the dirt road, and farms and eco-lodges around it run trips to watch birds, caimans and giant otters. The best time for wildlife is the dry season, roughly July to October.
