The photograph on every Rize postcard, dark timber houses in a green meadow floating above a sea of cloud, was taken here. Pokut is a yayla at roughly 2,030 m on the ridge that separates the Fırtına and Hala valleys, and on a clear dawn the Kaçkar peaks line up behind it as if drawn with a ruler. There is nothing to buy and no ticket to tear; the view is the entire point of the trip, and the only question that matters is whether the fog will let you see it. Getting there is half the story. From Rize city you drive about 75 km to the town of Çamlıhemşin in roughly an hour and a quarter, then begin a 15 km climb that takes another 1.5-2 hours, because the upper section is steep, unpaved and no place for a rental hatchback. Most visitors therefore come on the jeep excursions that run from Ayder or Çamlıhemşin, also sold as a long day trip from Uzungöl, usually bundling Pokut with the neighbouring Sal and Hazindak yaylas in half a day, sometimes adding Gito. If you drive yourself you need a proper 4x4 and steady nerves, and agree the jeep price before you get in, since it moves with the season and the size of the group. The season is short, roughly June to October, and snow closes the road for the rest of the year. In July and August the meadow fills with tour jeeps and families by mid-morning, yet it stays cool even on the coast's hottest days, so pack a light jacket for the children. Fog is the real adversary: it often climbs in by late morning and swallows the houses whole, which is why photographers sleep in the handful of timber houses converted into simple guesthouses and wake before sunrise. Book ahead in summer; comfort is rustic and unpretentious. For families, walking on the meadow is easy and step-free, but the climb up is rough on the stomach and poor for anyone prone to car sickness, and a pushchair is pointless here. Aim to arrive before ten, or you may see nothing but white.

The standard excursion links the three yaylas in half a day, and neighbouring Sal offers a similar view from another angle, usually with fewer people.
Çamlıhemşin district, Rize
Worth it if you can be there before ten and the sky is clear; nothing at Ayder matches the cloud-sea view. If the forecast says fog or the tour starts after lunch, you may pay for hours of bouncing to see only white, so stick with Ayder or wait a day.
Not advisable. The upper stretch is steep and unpaved, and rental contracts usually exclude such roads. The practical options are a jeep excursion from Çamlıhemşin or Ayder, or a genuine 4x4 with a driver who knows the track.
