Pompeii is a whole city needing half a day, its power in sweep; Herculaneum a quarter its size and twice its preservation โ upper floors, carbonised wood, more shade. Ideal: Pompeii first for the epic, Herculaneum another day for detail. With one day only: Pompeii, always, the first time.
The site is deliberately sparse with signage โ unexplained, you walk among beautiful mute stones. Three fixes: a two-hour guided tour then free roaming (best), the official audio guide, or an app and map prepared beforehand. Just do not enter context-naked.
Yes, for one ambitious day: buses from Pompei Scavi station to the volcano car park, then a half-hour climb to the crater rim โ the whole bay below. Book the crater slot online; volcano morning and ruins afternoon, or reversed in winter.

On an autumn morning in 79 AD Vesuvius erupted and buried the Roman city of Pompeii whole under ash โ and burying preserved it: streets, houses, baths, bakeries and wall paintings held exactly as they were at time-stop, so that walking it today is the closest possible experience to entering the ancient world itself. The site is a genuine city in scale: paved streets rutted by cart wheels, villas with their famous red frescoes โ the Villa of the Mysteries their summit โ two theatres and an amphitheatre older than the Colosseum, and snack bars with pots sunk into marble counters. Hardest to forget: the plaster casts poured into the body-hollows of victims, in their final postures. Give it a genuine half day at minimum, and bring water, hat and walking shoes โ shade is rare, the stones rough, the distances truly Roman. Vesuvius itself stands in the background, temporarily dormant as is its habit.
