Ponta da Piedade is the Algarve's greatest carving: Lagos' golden headland where the Atlantic dug a maze of pillars, arches and grottoes into twenty-metre cliffs โ honey rock standing in turquoise clear to the seabed: Portugal's most famous coastal scene after Benagil, and far larger. Its two faces complete each other: from above, boardwalks along the head's rim and a 182-step stair descending into the maze to see the arches from beneath โ from the sea, the fishermen's small boats off the stair's own jetty, or Lagos kayaks threading you through grottoes and passages no height reveals. Sunset from its upper walks is Lagos' first rite โ and the town itself (walls, governor's castle, market, living streets) completes the day: the west's loveliest base. From Faro seventy-five minutes โ and the Lagos-plus-Ponta day is a full west equal to Benagil's.
