Ponta Negra is a river beach on the Rio Negro at the western end of Manaus and the city's favourite promenade. About two kilometres of waterfront have been laid out with a walkway of Portuguese stone paving, an open-air amphitheatre for concerts, sports courts, three lookouts over the wide river and a musical fountain lit at night. The place changes with the river level: in the low-water season, roughly September to December, a broad sandy beach appears, while in the flood season the water rises over most of the sand. The water is warm and dark, as on all the Rio Negro. The best time to come is sunset, as the sun goes down over the river, followed by the evening, when families and food stalls fill the promenade. Swim only in the marked areas.
