International border.
The international bridge between Uruguaiana and Paso de los Libres, officially the Getúlio Vargas–Agustín Pedro Justo Bridge, is a combined road and rail bridge across the Uruguay River, linking Uruguaiana in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul with Paso de los Libres in the Argentine province of Corrientes. It is 1,419 metres long. Construction began in 1943 and it opened to traffic in 1945, but the coup in Brazil that year delayed its official inauguration until 1947. At the time it was built it was billed as the largest engineering work in Latin America. The bridge remains a major border crossing between Brazil and Argentina, with trucks and cars crossing its long span over the broad river. It can be admired from the riverbank in Uruguaiana, especially at sunset; crossing into Argentina involves the usual border formalities.
