A mountain lake in a rock basin at 1,500 metres: Popradské pleso lies at the end of the Mengusovská valley, walled by rock on three sides and pine forest on the fourth — and on its shore stands a historic mountain hut serving food and sheltering walkers, among the oldest in the Tatras. Reaching it is a walk, not a cable car: ninety minutes uphill from the Popradské pleso railway halt on a wide, partly paved path — an outstanding family route, and the best-known "easy" walk in the High Tatras for anyone wanting a real mountain lake without experience. Half an hour above the lake lies the Symbolic Cemetery of mountain victims: metal plaques on boulders among the trees carrying the names of those who died in the Tatras over a century, with wooden crosses — a silent, affecting place everyone who climbs visits. From the lake the harder summit trails begin, Rysy among them.
