Porto Jofre is a small settlement on the Cuiabá river in Poconé municipality, at the end of the Transpantaneira road, about 147 km from Poconé. It is the main gateway to the Encontro das Águas State Park, an area with one of the highest jaguar densities in the world. The park has no land entrance and is entered by boat along the rivers; entry is free, but you need to hire a boat and guide or stay at a specialist lodge. The boats cruise the channels where jaguars rest on the banks or move along the water's edge. The best season is July to October, the Pantanal dry season, when jaguars stay close to the riverbanks for water and prey, so the chances of seeing one rise, often more than once a day. The wetlands around are rich in waterbirds and migratory birds.
