**An immense white cliff falling vertically into turquoise water, with a thin ribbon of sand at its foot** โ on Lefkada's west coast, and one of the most familiar images of Greece. The name means **"the goat's harbour"**, because once only goats could reach it. โ **The approach goes down, not up**: you first stand **on the cliff edge**, where the car park and the famous view are, **then descend some eighty to a hundred steep steps** to the sand. โ **The colour comes from the cliff itself**: white limestone reflects light through the water, **making it a luminous turquoise** rather than blue. โ **The beach is narrow** and shrinks considerably at peak. โ **And it is fully exposed to the westerly wind** โ it can close or become unsafe on a blowy day.
