Finland's second-oldest town and its loveliest: Porvoo, 50 km east of Helsinki, is a medieval timber town of cobbled lanes, coloured houses and a fifteenth-century stone cathedral — its most famous image the row of red storehouses on the riverbank, painted red in 1760 to welcome the Swedish king and left so ever since. The lanes hold craft shops and cafés, the poet Runeberg's house, the Brunberg chocolate factory making the famous cream "kisses", and the town museum in the old town hall — with the old bridge for photographs from the far bank. The cathedral burned in 2006 and was restored as it was. The bus from Helsinki takes an hour, and in summer an old steamship plies the coast four hours each way — the capital's first day trip, done in half a day and deserving a whole one.
