Postojna is easier and more famous with its train and formations, suited to families; Škocjan is deeper and grander with its underground canyon (UNESCO) and needs walking and steps. For one visit with children Postojna; for nature lovers Škocjan.

The world's most famous show cave: Postojna is 24 kilometres of passages carved by the Pivka river through limestone, visited since 1819 — an electric train carries you 3.7 kilometres in on the world's first cave railway (1872) before a kilometre and a half on foot through halls of stalactites and stalagmites: the Great Hall, the Big Mountain, the thin "spaghetti", the "Brilliant", the famous five-metre white column, and the Concert Hall hosting orchestras with church acoustics. The cave's star is the olm, the "baby dragon": a blind pink amphibian living a century and fasting for years, seen in its cave tank and in the neighbouring Vivarium. A constant 10 degrees, so a jacket is required in summer. An hour from Ljubljana by car or bus, and paired with Predjama Castle 9 km away on a combined ticket: Slovenia's most famous day out.
