A grand country estate in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, about 40 minutes south of Dublin, famous for its landscaped gardens covering 19 hectares and often ranked among the finest gardens in the world. The house began as a thirteenth-century castle and was turned into a Palladian mansion by the architect Richard Cassels between 1731 and 1741; a fire gutted it in 1974 and it stood as a shell until its restoration in 1996, and today it holds shops and a café. The highlights are the Italian terraces stepping down to Triton Lake and its fountain, with a stunning view of the conical Sugar Loaf mountain, along with the Japanese Garden, walled gardens and avenues of giant trees. Garden tickets are about €14 for adults, per visitor guides; Powerscourt Waterfall, one of the highest in Ireland, lies a few kilometres away with a separate ticket. Visit in spring or summer when the flowers are out.
