Praça Getúlio Vargas is the main square of Nova Friburgo, the mountain city in Rio de Janeiro state, in the heart of its commercial centre next to Praça Demerval Barbosa Moreira. The national heritage institute has listed it since 1972, and like many squares in Brazil it is named after President Getúlio Vargas. It is a pleasant corner of the city, marked by giant century-old eucalyptus trees planted in their day to help drain the site, along with other plants, a playground and a fountain, and it holds an integration station for the city buses. At weekends craft stalls spread across the square, and on Sundays local women bring delicious homemade sweets to offer visitors. Around it are the arts centre, the post office, the old courthouse, shops and restaurants, making it a starting point for a walk around town.
