Prados is a small town of about nine thousand people in the Campo das Vertentes region of Minas Gerais, at 979 metres, close to Tiradentes and São João del-Rei, and known for its crafts in wood and iron and its leather footwear. It dates from 1704, when members of an expedition organised by the Prado family from Taubaté settled here and began mining gold, giving the town its name. Farms and villages later grew around it, and in 1881 a station opened on the Oeste de Minas railway; it closed in 1983 and its building now stands in ruins. The great draw is the village of Vitoriano Veloso, better known as Bichinho, part of the municipality, with its many workshops and shops selling wooden and iron crafts, furniture and decorative pieces, very close to Tiradentes. Prados also has a small museum telling the life of its people through photographs and old tools.
