Praia da Ferrugem is one of the nine beaches of Garopaba, Santa Catarina, about seven kilometres south of the town centre. A small lagoon and a «sambaqui», an ancient shell mound left by the Carijó people, separate it from Praia da Barra. Its name, «rust», comes from the ochre-coloured water that runs down the hillsides into the Lagoa Encantada and out through the Barra channel. The beach itself has soft, clean sand and blue sea, and its waves are among the most sought-after by surfers in the area. It is very popular with young visitors from Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and São Paulo and with Argentine and Uruguayan tourists in the summer season from December to February, when its restaurants and bars fill up. Out of season it turns quiet and is good for walks on the sand.
