Praia da Graciosa is an artificial urban beach in Palmas, capital of Tocantins, on the shore of the lake formed when the Tocantins River was dammed by the Lajeado hydroelectric plant. It is one of the city's best-known postcard views. The original Graciosa was a seasonal beach on the left bank of the Tocantins and a favourite meeting place for the first residents of the new capital, but it was flooded in 2001 when the reservoir formed. The new beach was built as part of a linear park stretching some twenty kilometres along the lakeshore and named after the old one in its memory. The beach runs for 520 metres, with sports courts, toilets, playgrounds, a marina and a camping area, plus restaurants and bars serving local dishes, above all tucunaré fish. It hosts the New Year celebrations and sporting and cultural events, and sunset over the lake is one of its finest sights. Take care when swimming: piranha bites have been recorded here.
