Barequeçaba is a beach seven kilometres south of the centre of São Sebastião, on the Rio–Santos coast road linking Rio de Janeiro with Santos. Its name comes from the Tupi language and means «place where the priest sleeps», and it is sometimes spelt «Baraqueçaba». Its hallmark is water that deepens very slowly and waves that are weak most of the time, making it one of the best beaches for families with small children on this coast. It mixes a permanent population, many of them retired, with visitors whose numbers swell in summer, so restaurants and shops stay open all year. Small marinas send boats across to Ilhabela island, whose green mountains fill the horizon. It suits a quiet day of swimming and relaxing away from the crowds of the bigger beaches, combined with historic central São Sebastião or a boat trip to Ilhabela. Arrive early in the summer holidays.
